The Core Competencies sit at the foundation of Korowai Tupu - therefore being able to demonstrate competency against them is a requirement of entry into the association.
That means being able to demonstrate (through your application) knowledge and practice in your understanding of:
- the context of young people
- the context of youth work
- bicultural partnerships
- building connectedness
- quality relationships
- the safety of young people
- a strengths-based approach
- youth participation
- reflective practice
We have also set some indicators of the necessary levels of experience/qualifications needed to become an Accredited Member:
- 6 years FT/10 years PT experience, no qualification
- Certificate in youth work + 5 years FT/8 years PT
- Diploma in youth work + 3 years FT/5 years PT
- Degree in a related area + 3 years FT/5 years PT
- Degree of youth work + 2 years FT/4 years PT
If you see it as a pathway - there is a firm line of being able to demonstrate competency as a requirement of entry into the association and a more flexible line of indicators of the levels of experience and qualifications needed to become an Accredited Member - in order to allow for them to be determined on a case by case basis.
Korowai Tupu Accredited Member - people who can demonstrate both competency and the necessary levels of experience/qualifications.
Korowai Tupu Member - people who can demonstrate competency but don't yet have the necessary levels of experience/qualifications. This membership is provisional in nature and is about identifying what extra support is required during this period until the necessary levels of experience/qualifications have been achieved.
Korowai Tupu Organisation Partner - this category is still being developed in consultation with organisations to find the best way to support and include volunteers and students in the association who don't necessarily want to become personal members.
Applicants will be able to apply as practising youth or non-practising - to allow for people who identify as a youth worker but are currently non-practising (eg managers, tutors, or people between roles).

Determining fees for Korowai Tupu Organisation Partner will happen as part of conversations with organisations in the development of this category.
We are also working out ways to support organisations who want to pay their youth worker's membership fees through a possible bulk rate - if this is something you are interested in please contact us on korowaitupu@arataiohi.org.nz
