Women’s Refuge is New Zealand's leading agency in responding to and preventing domestic violence. In addition to the many services provided to women and children, they offer an additional service called Whānau Protect-National Home Safety Service.
Please find attached a client flyer, developed by NCIWR and approved by Ministry of Justice. They would appreciate it if you could email this out to other external referrers, stakeholders and community partners so they are aware and understand the Whānau Protect service. Should you require hardcopies of the flyers, please email email@example.com to request these.
Please also find the Referral form here.
This service is available to victims of domestic violence who are at high risk of repeat victimisation and of serious injury or death, if they remain in their homes without a safety upgrade. As part of the Whānau Protect service, the victims’ receive a home safety upgrade. The focus of the upgrade is the Safe Room, this is a secured room, usually the bathroom, which the victim and her tamariki can escape to. The property safety upgrade provides safety measures to prevent the offender from entering the house. They allow the victim time to trigger the alarm and get into the Safe Room while waiting for the NZ Police to arrive. Property Safety Upgrades can include: doors and windows strengthened, locks replaced, security lights, cutting back vegetation that block visibility and smoke alarms.
