This work was commissioned to inform the Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy, currently being developed by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Although it has profound insights from children and young people that will benefit a much broader audience, and can inform community action, government work programmes, and individual understanding of issues children and young people are facing today.
From what children and young people told us, we identified four key insights about what a good life means, and what we could focus on to improve wellbeing for all children and young people:
- Change is needed
- Family and whānau are crucial
- Providing the basics is important, but not enough on its own
- Children and young people have valuable insights
