We took our post-its and asked the young people of Festival for the Future to share with us what they'd like Aotearoa to know about young people/them.
Thanks to the amazing participation from Festival for the Future attendees we put together a pretty cool short-list of Youth Week themes to vote on:

  •  Declutter - don't complicate your mind
  •  We are capable - embrace our abilities
  •  We are more than you see
  •  Our issues are valid
  •  Resilient young people are the future

We took this to a Facebook vote and young people overwhelmingly voted for: "We are more than you see"! Which we launched at Involve 2018!

The full theme was later emcompassed to be: "We are more than you see; He wai hōhonu a mātou" (literally, we are deep waters, thus referring to unseen depths).

From conversations, discussions and feedback we suggest that young people and their community utilise positive youth development to explore the depth of young people. Looking beyond perceptions and physical appearances - valuing more than what face value can present.

We hope that this theme will allow for those participating in Youth Week to share a diverse range of events, resources and celebrations that amplify youth voices.
