- Janell Vaughn | Ara Taiohi
< Back Janell Vaughn Thank you for your interest in supervision with me! To start with, let me introduce myself. I’m originally from an area of the States known as the Pacific Northwest, with a gorgeous mountain called Mt Baker and connection with the Salish Sea through the Nooksack River. When I moved to Aotearoa, I found a deep connection with Aoraki and Waianiwaniwa as my river, and Motukiekie as my place. My experience comes first as a youth worker for 18 years moving into working in moderate to severe adolescent mental health in 2010. I’ve trained in mental health and AoD through my Master’s degree in Social Work. I’ve been working in Aotearoa in a variety of services including ICAMHS, Oranga Tamariki, Tu Ora Compass Health as a tutor at WelTec/Whitireia, a practice manager at Vibe and in youth mental health at Te Herenga Waka. I’ve come into the supervisor space with experience in counselling/therapy, social work, youth work and an emphasis in working with adolescents. I’ve trained professional supervision through WelTec. For me, supervision is a time for you to reflect on what has happened, develop a great understanding into what is going on now and launch back into practice better prepared for what comes your way. My Approach I’m an adolescent mental health practitioner who has practical experience in many different areas of youth development. As a supervisor I bring a range of specialities into my practice including mental health, alcohol and other drug addiction, youth justice, statutory youth work, working alongside indigenous populations, and various faith based sector experiences. I have also been a youth development tutor so bring a knowledge of the NZ sector of youth work into my practice. My supervision is first and foremost about you and what you need to serve our young people. - Rod Baxter | Ara Taiohi
< Back Rod Baxter Code of Ethics/ Mana Taiohi My early years in youth work (late 90s) were shaped by experienced ABL facilitators; I’m indebted to them for a foundation in experiential education, and a bunch of wacky energisers. I also studied theatre of social change with a focus on improvisation, spontaneity, collaboration and play. My training approach mirrors quality youth / group work: I keep things grounded, meaningful, participatory, inclusive, and purposeful. We’ll get connected, form relationships, identify our collective goals, achieve our purpose, and exceed expectations. Time flies and we’ll want to keep learning. Hopefully there’s lots of laughter. As Tangata Tiriti, I’m committed to exploring bicultural approaches to learning and growing that have reciprocal and collective benefits. Kei te ako ahau i te reo Māori, ā, ka kōrero au i ngā wānanga. Get ready for: reflective feeling cards, felt pens, post-it notes, whiteboard diagrams, PowerPoints that won’t make you snooze, moving around often, small group activities, throwing around soft toys, Lego, hula hoops, rubber chickens, Mr Potato Head, buckets, ping pong balls, pool noodles, and other random junk that I’m recycling. I really want to find a eco-friendly alternative to balloons. rod.baxter@kingstrust.org.nz

< Back Wānanga Whakarongo By Puāwai Health & Sport, Cultural, Other Puāwai | Hauora Aotearoa Target Age: 12-24 Address: Level 2/57 Willis Street, Te Aro, Wellington 6011, New Zealand When: 23 May 2026 4:00 am https://app.tickettailor.com/dashboard Puaawai@hauoraaotearoa.com Puāwai project is celebrating Youth Week in 2026 by holding Wānanga Whakarongo, an event for rangatahi with no specific outcome. The event’s aim is to provide a space where rangatahi can learn from each other, discuss, reflect and digest their thoughts, experiences and perspectives on Mental Health and Hauora. The event is self guided, with those attending able to engage as they wish. The only take away being whatever they choose to take with them. We wanted to run this event and use this space to take some pressure off, noticing a lot of rangatahi events and discussions are often for an outcome - tickbox, policy or otherwise. This space is just for rangatahi to exist in. Previous Next
