I’ve been a youth worker since 2000, and I’ve had supervision every month since. It’s undoubtedly one of the things that’s sustained my practice. After supervising groups in volunteer roles, I was first asked to be a colleague’s supervisor in 2003. After a few years of stumbling around, I studied a postgrad qualification through 2006-2007: it focused my supervision practice and helped me be a better youth worker too. These days I’m the CEO of The King’s Trust Aotearoa. I devote a day each fortnight to offer supervision to a range of practitioners, mostly in youth development and/or serving communities. I’m part of several supervision networks, most notably The Project Team: https://theprojectteam.co.nz/professional-supervision/ My husband Dylan is a local teacher; we’re slowly renovating an old villa. I’m studying te reo Māori and read comic books to unwind.
My Approach
How ‘super’ is your ‘vision’? How comprehensively do you see the work you’re doing? How might another perspective help strengthen your mahi - for the benefit of young people (or whomever you serve), your organisation, yourself, and the profession. My super-vision approach is intentional, collaborative and strengths-based. It works best when you arrive with clarity about what you want to discuss, and we reflect thoroughly. I’m here to support and challenge you, to offer resources and ideas, and to prompt action. You can read a bit more about my approach in the resource I wrote for youth workers called the ‘Supervision Scrapbook’, available via Ara Taiohi. I also facilitate workshops about how to get the most out of supervision, and how to be an intentional supervisor. This includes a micro-credential with Praxis.
