Rowan Cant

Kia ora,

Kei te mihi ki a koe. Well done for looking for supervision. This is the first step to looking after yourself.  I'm Rowan, my ancestors came from England and Wales, but I was bought up in rural New Zealand. I've been in Auckland for the past 15 years and have been involved in youth work for the past 25 years.  I'm a Christian, but don't let that deter you if you aren't. My faith has taught me that Jesus was generally on the side of whoever is most oppressed by society. So I'm a friend of those who are pushed out by religion.

I'm a registered social worker and have been a youth justice social worker for 10 years.  Now I'm a tutor for Praxis youth work certificate and I'm an elected member of the Puketāpapa local board. I've recently completed my post-graduate diploma in clinical supervision.

My Approach

Supervisees often mirror the practice of their supervisors. They copy their ideas, but also when they get poor support, they give poor support. My supervision style is to listen well, to get creative and to create a relaxed environment in which to reflect. I'm a big fan of Webber-Dreddon's Kaitiakitanga model of supervision because it's got a good amount of structure to it and I think it offers a helpful process for navigating discussions. That being said, I'm open to exploring what works best for you and to help you explore what process can help you to best reflect on what you need to reflect on.
