Toia Chase
Kia ora! Ko Tūwharetoa me Ngāti Whitikaupeka. Ko Toia Chase ahau. I am a registered clinical counsellor and supervisor with over 25 years’ experience across private practice, school, and community settings. I have also worked as a youth worker for over 30 years in both community and church contexts. I work alongside a range of practitioners including counsellors, social workers, youth workers, and those in related helping roles. My practice is shaped by experience in trauma work, cultural contexts, and an awareness of the systemic challenges that can impact both practitioners and those they support. Music, touch rugby, movies, and spending time with significant people in my life are some of the activities I value. Also important to me are wairua connections and serving the community, with a belief that each of us has something of value to contribute, and that finding what connects us strengthens whanaungatanga.
My Approach
I believe that being connected to our mauri (life force/essence) grounds identity and reveals inner strengths. This informs my supervision, supporting practitioners to stay connected to themselves and their practice within complex and demanding contexts. My approach to clinical supervision is holistic, reflective, and practitioner-centred, grounded in strengths-based and culturally responsive practice. I offer a safe, relational space for practitioners to reflect on clinical work, ethical practice, wellbeing, and professional identity. Working from an integrative, kiritaki-centred approach, I listen deeply to practitioners’ experiences and the stories within their work. Through reflective questioning and shared whakaaro, I support supervisees to recognise the value in their work, strengthen self-awareness, and build confidence, resources, and hope. I offer supervision in a range of formats including individual and group, kanohi ki te kanohi and online.
