Celebrating Youth Work in Aotearoa: Safe places, trusted support, opportunities to thrive

From 3–9 November, Aotearoa joins the global celebration of International Youth Work

Week; a chance to recognise the transformative impact of Youth Work and the dedicated

professionals who walk alongside young people every day.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Youth Work in Aotearoa – Safe places, trusted support,

opportunities to thrive,” reflects the vital role youth workers play in creating environments

where young people can build confidence and strengthen their sense of belonging.

Youth Work changes lives,” says Jane Zintl, Chief Executive of Ara Taiohi, the national peak

body for youth development. “Every day across Aotearoa, youth workers are supporting

rangatahi to navigate challenges, discover their strengths, and find their place in the world.

When we invest in Youth Work, we invest in stronger communities and better futures for all young people.”

Research consistently shows that youth development approaches lead to improved

wellbeing, connections, and long-term outcomes for young people. By creating safe,

inclusive spaces and offering trusted support, youth workers help ensure that every young

person has the opportunity to thrive.

Ara Taiohi invites communities, organisations, and young people to take part in celebrating

Youth Work this week — whether by sharing stories, thanking youth workers, or

highlighting the difference Youth Work makes using the hashtag #IYWW.

“International Youth Work Week is a reminder of the incredible dedication within our

sector,” says Zintl. “Youth Work doesn’t just benefit individual rangatahi – it benefits

whānau, communities, and Aotearoa as a whole".
