Our event will provide spaces for young people to share their voice on topics that are important to them such as campaigns, their interests, raising awareness etc via canvas painting, poster making, and zine making; all to be shared on the walls at Evolve and through our social media. Our event is designed to encourage young people to share their voice in different and creative ways, in a space where they can connect with other young people. Alongside different creative stations, we will have a Mocktail creating station, delicious kai, a low-sensory room (for breaks and people with sensory needs) and a fun music playlist of local kiwi artists. We will invite and hope to have local MPs in attendance to connect with and hear young people's perspectives first hand. Our hope is that young people can come to this event and feel they have expressed their voice visually, and have been (or will be) heard. We want the event to project their voices to the wider community, as they see fit. Previous Next

Friday 22nd May 9-3pm - Daytime: Day Workshop Hosted at Ūkaipō Gallery and creation (private kaupapa) 6pm - Showcase and exhibition open for two hours for public viewing and poetry readings (public) This kaupapa brings rangatahi together during Youth Week for a bold, creative activation grounded in voice, storytelling, and collective expression. Delivered in collaboration with a local youth organisation, the event invites rangatahi to reconnect with their experiences of kāinga and transform these into a collaborative art activism piece. This event, He pī ka rere centres rangatahi as creators and decision-makers, using art as a medium to explore housing realities, belonging, and aspirations for the future. Through painting, writing, and visual storytelling, participants will contribute to a shared artwork that reflects both individual journeys and collective narratives. This process creates a space for expression that is accessible, empowering, and grounded in kaupapa Māori values. The event aims to amplify the rangatahi voice, demonstrate the power of creative activism, and show how lived experience can inform and influence wider community conversations about kāinga. It positions rangatahi not only as storytellers, but as agents of change shaping their own futures. The completed artwork will culminate in a public showcase evening at Ūkaipō Gallery, where whānau, community members, and stakeholders are invited to engage with the work. This exhibition creates a platform for rangatahi voices to be seen, heard, and celebrated, extending the impact of the kaupapa beyond the event itself. Previous Next

  • Russell Hockley | Ara Taiohi

< Back Russell Hockley Code of Ethics/ Mana Taiohi Facilitator Ko Russell Hockley tōku ingoa
He uri ahau nō te Maunga Titohea o Taranaki, Te Aupouri, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Porou me Kōtirana (Scotland). Whānau sits at the centre of my world. After more than 20 years married to my incredible wife, we’ve built a busy and beautiful life with our nine tamariki and two treasured mokopuna. A mentor and whanaunga of mine once shared that there are three things he looks for in a matua. They must: 1. Have BELIEF - That change is possible 2. Be GENUINE - Know who you are 3. Have HEART - Love what you do and be passionate I have been working with Taiohi for over 15 years and have formed valuable relationships and networks over that time. My facilitation style is shaped by a wānanga approach and guided by whānau values of whanaungatanga, kōrero pono, and collective learning. I strive to create safe, inclusive spaces where everyone feels respected, valued, and confident to contribute. I am committed to nurturing strong relationships, strengthening identity and belonging, and recognising the strengths and aspirations that taiohi and their whānau carry with them. I enjoy facilitating because it allows me to walk alongside taiohi and their whānau as they explore their potential. Through whakawhanaungatanga, collaborative learning, and mana-affirming practice, we grow together as a whānau. russell.hockley@hotmail.com 0273492948
