The week centers on the creation and performance of an original haka that responds to the Youth Week theme: "Taringa whakarongo! Ki te reo o ngā taiohi – Our voices matter! We deserve to be heard". Throughout the week, participants will: - Collaborate on original kupu and movement that reflect what youth voice means to them. - Engage in sports, shared kai, and a community sausage sizzle at the local skatepark to connect with the wider public. - Perform and film their completed haka to be shared online with whānau and the community, amplifying the strength of youth leadership in the region. This campaign will consist of three simple events: A Paint and Sip, “Hoops and Heroes”, and a color run. The Paint and Sip will kick off youth week, and allow rangatahi to wind down, and do some after-school painting with their mates. “Hoops and Heroes” is an initiative aiming to foster understanding between federal officials such as police officers and firefighters and taiohi; it is an event that invites young people to play friendly rounds of basketball against police officers and firefighters to create engagement and connection. And finally, the color run will be a fun, exciting end to our campaign where rangatahi can have fun and get outside, and also get some physical exercise. Previous Next

Mana Taiohi and Active Recreation A case study Working together Ara Taiohi and Ihi Aotearoa - Sport NZ use the Mana Taiohi principles to develop the Active Recreation for Rangatahi Plan. Both organisations share a deep commitment to supporting the wellbeing of rangatahi in Aotearoa. We know that being physically active and participating in positive youth development programmes that are informed by Te Ao Māori increases young people’s wellbeing. The Sport NZ/Ara Taiohi partnership has allowed us to explore the potential of weaving these ingredients together and the positive impact this can have on young people. The eight rākau in the logo represent the eight principles of Mana Taiohi and the taiaha in the middle represents the champions. Join us for a screening of short films created by rangatahi in collaboration with Day One and Youth Week. Youth Voices On Screen is a celebration of rangatahi filmmakers, presented by Day One in partnership with Ara Taiohi and libraries across Aotearoa during Youth Week (May 18–24).
