Teaching across youth participation and tikanga Māori within diploma and degree programmes has become a genuine passion of mine. This sits on a foundation of working alongside young people in secondary schools, community and not-for-profit settings, and through innovative community development initiatives, including well-being systems change mahi, mentoring and casework practice. Over the past five years, I have also been growing my supervision practice, following the completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Supervision with NMIT. Having recently begun a Master of Applied Social Work at Massey University, I am enjoying strengthening my practice in youth development and integrating this within social practice education, guided by Mana Taiohi principles. While my current role sits largely within education, it remains important to me to stay connected to practice and to those working alongside young people. I am always open to working alongside youth workers and others who support and walk alongside rangatahi. I have worked both in kaupapa Māori and mainstream organisations and has been fortunate to practice Social Work in Aotearoa, Australia and the United Kingdom. I support young people who are experiencing difficulties with emotional regulation, trauma, behavioral concerns, and attachment relationships, and I work alongside families to strengthen connection and shared regulation within their systems. I work with children aged 0–24, with experience in trauma, attachment disruptions, parent work, and systemic family interventions, using an integrative, child-led approach grounded in psychodynamic play therapy, art therapy, DDP, polyvagal theory, and TI-CBT. My practice is grounded in attachment-focused and trauma-responsive approaches. I hold in mind the child or young person, their developmental stage, their nervous system, and the wider system they are part of. My work centers on strengthening relational safety, emotional regulation, and whānau connection. My Approach My approach to supervision is collaborative, reflective, and relationship-based. I aim to create a safe, supportive, and containing space where supervisees feel comfortable sharing both their successes and areas for growth without fear of judgement. < Back Morgan Dando I'm Dando (they/them)! Born and raised in Highbury, Te Papaioea, I am a product of my community and my mahi reflects this. My mahi has focused on youth and community development, particularly in the takatāpui and queer rangatahi wellbeing space. I also work in sexual violence prevention and postvention providing sensitive claims social work, developing prevention programmes and providing policy advice and consultation. I’m currently the National Practice Lead for my organisation, prior to that I was the manager of our Youth Services. Before all of that, I'm a parent to three young tamariki, one at school and two at kōhanga reo. My wife, tamariki and I live under Taranaki maunga with our dog and two cats. I love art, the whānau that raised me, and am staunch in my positionality as a treaty partner. My Approach I view relational exchange as key to strengthening and developing anyone's practice. I am not The Expert - we are just two people curiously exploring your practice! A commitment to critical self-reflection is at the heart of my approach to supervision. I believe supervision should also be a space for celebration, recognition of achievements, and identifying growth! Joy and laughter always has a place in my whare. < Back Danae Bernard Hi :) I'm currently the manager of a youth mental health and addiction service in the South Waikato. I have a background in education having been a high school teacher for 13 years, and I have a hobby business cleaning bones and skulls for display and education. I'm a bit different, and I have a lifetime of experience navigating professional environments and the demands that come with them, while being the sort of person who doesn't fit the mold. I am part of a number of minority demographics, and have experienced the many small but compounding disadvantages that this brings with it as well as the resultant health difficulties. As a result I identify quite strongly with our CPSLE workforce. I'm a neurodiverse member of the Rainbow Community, and have fostered kittens for the last 9 years. My Approach I ask a lot of questions! I believe that most of the answers to the questions or dilemmas we struggle with at work already exist within us, we might just need some help to draw them out. I'm especially passionate about sharing my understanding of leadership and professionalism, while maintaining one's authentic self as a person who is 'not your usual'. This might mean you're part of one or more minorities, or you have Lived Experience to contribute to your mahi. I believe there are likely to be a fair few people out there who don't feel they fit in with the expectations of others from time to time, and those people should have every opportunity to reach their potential. The event will be held on Saturday 23rd May, 9:30am–12:30pm at Chilton St James School. We are aiming to bring together around 80–100 young people from across Hutt Valley and Wellington regions. It’s a youth-led event focused on promoting youth voices, celebrating volunteering, and strengthening multicultural leadership within our community. The programme will include a youth panel discussion, interactive leadership workshops, and a recognition of service ceremony, where youth volunteers will be acknowledged. The Deputy Mayor will also be attending and speaking, which is really exciting and adds to the significance of the event. A key part of the vision for this event is to bring together student leaders from different schools across Lower Hutt to collaborate.
